Driving Academy is Greater Newburyport's premier driving school.
Our offices and classroom are conveniently located in the Latitude
Sports Club Complex (formerly Gold’s Gym) located at the
Auto Mall, 191 Elm Street (Route 110), Salisbury, MA.
Baystate Driving Academy (BDA) has been in business since May
of 1999 and has graduated thousands of driver ed students. BDA
has an excellent safety record and continues with its high degree
of professionalism and excellence.
In the classroom…
BDA uses the latest modern technology to teach students about
Risk Awareness and Crash Avoidance. In addition, simulators are
used to test students’ motor skills and comprehension.
About the owner…
BDA owner, operator, and instructor Paul G. Greaney is no newcomer
to Traffic Safety. He has served as a police officer for nearly 33
years.
Paul started his Law Enforcement career as a police officer for the Town
of Salisbury, continuing on to the Massachusetts Registry of Motor
Vehicles. He served 20 years at the RMV working his way up to the Rank
of Chief Inspector serving for 5 years as Chief before going on to the
Massachusetts State Police. Paul retired from the Massachusetts State
Police in 1996 with the Rank of Major. He was Bureau Commander in charge
of Traffic for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for the five years
preceding his retirement. His daily duties dealt with Licensing and
Traffic Safety issues.
Paul is a graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy where he specialized
in Instructor Development. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Western New
England College.
As President of the Massachusetts Professional Driving School
Association, Paul continues to strive for the updating of laws,
rules and regulations that govern the Driver Education Industry
therefore producing a safe driver.
Baystate Driving Academy is a full service driving school and is
licensed by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. Massachusetts
State Laws require that any person between the age of 16 ½ and 18 who
has held a violation free learner’s permit for at least 6 months may
take a road test for a license if they have successfully completed a
Driver Education Course.
The Massachusetts Basic Driver Education
Course* as mandated by law consists of:
- 30 Hours – Classroom
- 12 Hours – Behind the Wheel
- 6 Hours – Observation of Another Student Driving
- 40 Hours of Supervised Practice
- 2 Hour Class for Parents
* Students that do not obtain their Learner's Permit
prior to 9/1/07 are required by law to take 6 additional
1 hour Road Lessons for a total of 12 hours.

At
BDA we offer the above Driver Education Course. Generally classes
will meet on Tuesday and Wednesdays from 6 PM to 9 PM for 5 weeks.
During the summertime we offer an accelerated program and class
is held Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM including a 1 hour
lunch break. After the successful completion of the classroom
portion, road lessons are scheduled.
Road lessons are usually broken down into two hour lessons. Road
lessons are scheduled weekdays after school, before or after work,
etc. and Saturday mornings. If geographically workable, students
will be picked up for their road lessons.
